There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1-4

I hated it. I know, I know, as a Christian the only thing I’m supposed to hate is sin. However, this story is about the Smith family pre-salvation. Somehow, someone got our family the “cute” little doggies that hung on little hooks next to a “dog house” with the sentence above it: “Who’s in the dog house now?”

Someone was always in the dog house. (Yes, I spent quite a bit of time there, is that a surprise?) Daddy – not very often. Mama – hardly ever. Michael – sometimes. Mario – might as well set up housekeeping! Julian – sometimes. Jonathan – more and more as the brothers left home.

You would do something that was displeasing or that would upset Mama and the next thing you know, whoever was presently in the dog house would be set free and your dog with your name on its collar was there. Shame! Shame on you!

There was no plea agreement. No court of law that might find you could make your case. Nope, what Mama said was THE LAW! You were banished to the wastelands and everyone who came to visit, neighbors, relatives, friends, would see you there and the question would be: What did you do?

I will tell you right now, if you, as a believer, have one of these, don’t donate it or put it in a yard sale. Put it in the trash! Do not think of it as “cute” or a joke – your children will see it differently. They will feel condemned.

That’s why Paul told the Romans that we are not condemned! God has declared us to be not guilty and that we are not to walk after the flesh, where the Law condemns, but to walk after the Spirit, where there is life and light!

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16
