Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock crowing,or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
Mark 13:35-37

Bonny and I took a vacation and went up to New Hampshire to visit my family. One evening my parents left to take care of errands leaving Bonny and me with my youngest brother Jonathan. We were all dressed very casually (I think I was in cutoffs and no shirt) and watching (I think) “Heehaw”.

Hamlet (pictured below, ½ St. Bernard, ½ German Shepherd) sat up suddenly and looked out the living room picture window.

Jonathan said, “It’s Daddy’s boss and his wife and they are dressed to the 9’s!”

All I could think of was, “Change the channel to PBS and let’s get better dressed!” (Wait, what?!?!? Change the channel to PBS??!?) In just a minute the couple knocked on the door and we invited them in.

We told them the folks were out but they would return shortly, so Jonathan and I did what we Smith boys do best – we told them stories! First there were introductions because I had never met them (only heard their names mentioned) and neither had Bonny.

We offered them something to drink and they both sat there politely smiling and listening to Finn and me just rattle on. Fortunately, the folks weren’t too long in returning and as they came in, seeing Daddy’s boss and his wife dressed up, Daddy asked him how they were.

Now it just so happened this was Bonny’s first time meeting the family (outside of Julian, my Best Man, and grandma, she hadn’t meet any of them) and Mama had arranged a “coming out party” and had invited a whole group of their friends to come meet her.

“Well, Hilry, we came for the party.” The man answered.

“Oh, that’s tomorrow night!” Daddy said.

The man looked at his wife and said, “You said it was tonight!!!” (He was not happy). She apologized to my folks and to us and you could tell she was embarrassed.

They made like they were going to leave and Mama and Daddy asked them to stay and visit. The husband told my folks what good hosts we 3 were and how much they enjoyed the stories (at that point Mama got a horrified look on her face thinking of what in the world we had said!).

They did come back the next night and we all had a good laugh at them showing up a day early.

Just like this couple showing up unexpectedly, when Jesus returns, it will be unexpected for many. That is why He encouraged us all to “watch” – pay attention! Be aware! Jesus is returning and no one, except the Father, knows when. Do not be caught unawares! Watch!
