HOW DID THIS STAIN COME OUT?

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Ephesians 5:25-26

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:5

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

In the early 90’s Bonny and I lived in an area in Idaho called Myrtle Grove that was located right next to the Clearwater River. There were about a dozen homes in Myrtle Grove and it was beautiful to say the least.

One summer it was exceptionally hot (100+ every day for days) and the best way to cool off was to go swim in the river. Now, the Clearwater River was a very cold river so it would take a few minutes to get all the way in. However, if you stayed in that cold water for about a ½ hour or so, it would lower your body temperature so that the 100+ degree summer day felt comfortable!

I had a favorite white knit short sleeved shirt that I would wear around the house but not out shopping or visiting because there was a huge stain right in the middle of it. It was probably 8 or 9 inches in diameter (most likely a coffee stain!) and no matter how much or which kind of soap she used or how many washings Bonny did, the stain remained.

I started wearing the shirt when we went to the river to swim and cool off (almost every day). After a couple weeks I noticed that the stain was completely gone! There was no trace of it at all!

It was because that when I wore it in the river, I was constantly washing it – even though I didn’t use any soap.

So too, are we to “wash” our minds through the Word. We are inundated with the world; signs, ads, tv, radio, magazines, and people talking around and to us. The world is intrusive. Our minds see and hear things, sometimes unavoidable, that need to be “washed” out.

That is why the apostle Paul said to renew our minds in Romans and tells the young preacher, Titus, it is by the washing of regeneration we cleanse our minds. Ceremonial washings only clean the outside of the body when what we really need is having our minds cleansed.

So, go to the river (of the Holy Spirit) and let the “water” of the “Word” cleanse you!
